Character counter.
Count characters with and without spaces, live, with limits for Twitter/X, SEO titles, and bios. Private, nothing uploaded.
Runs entirely in your browser — nothing is uploaded.
Count the characters in any text instantly, with and without spaces, and check it against the limits that matter, Twitter/X posts, SEO titles, meta descriptions, and bios. It runs entirely in your browser, so nothing is uploaded and there's no cap on length.
Characters with vs. without spaces
Two numbers matter depending on where the text is going. "With spaces" is the total length including every space and line break, which is what social platforms, SMS, and form fields enforce. "Without spaces" strips the spaces out, a count some universities and style guides ask for. The counter shows both at once so you don't have to guess which one a limit refers to; when in doubt, platforms almost always mean with spaces.
Common character limits to know
Keep these ceilings in mind: a standard X (Twitter) post is 280 characters; an SEO page title is best kept under ~60 so Google doesn't truncate it; a meta description around 150–155; an Instagram caption allows up to 2,200 but the first ~125 show before "more"; an Instagram bio is 150; a single SMS segment is 160. Treat each as a hard ceiling and leave a little headroom, platforms count links and emoji differently, and some emoji take two or more characters.
Why emoji and links can skew the count
A character count isn't always what you'd eyeball. Many emoji are made of multiple code units, so one emoji can register as two characters or more, and skin-tone or flag emoji count higher still. Some platforms also shorten every link to a fixed length regardless of the URL you paste. This tool counts the actual characters in your text; if a platform rejects a post that looks under the limit, an emoji or a long link is usually the reason.
Tips
- X (Twitter) posts cap at 280 characters, watch the with-spaces number.
- Keep SEO titles under ~60 characters and meta descriptions near 150–155.
- Instagram shows only the first ~125 characters of a caption before "more", front-load the hook.
- An emoji may count as two or more characters, so leave headroom near a hard limit.

Questions
- Does it count spaces as characters?
- It shows both: characters including spaces (what most platforms and SMS enforce) and characters excluding spaces (asked for by some academic counts). You pick whichever your limit means.
- What's the character limit for a tweet?
- A standard X (Twitter) post is 280 characters. Keep an eye on the with-spaces count, and remember emoji can each take two or more characters.
- Why does my count differ from another site's?
- Usually emoji and line breaks. Some emoji are multiple characters, and whether trailing line breaks are counted varies. This tool counts the real characters in the box, including spaces and line breaks.
- Is my text private?
- Yes. It never leaves your browser, there's no upload, no account, and nothing is stored.
