Which way to rotate
Match the rotation to how the clip is wrong. A phone video shot in landscape but showing sideways usually needs 90° in one direction; if the first try faces the wrong way, use the opposite 90°. A clip that's fully upside down, common when a phone was held with the camera at the bottom, needs 180°. Rotation turns the whole frame as one piece, so a 1920×1080 clip rotated 90° becomes 1080×1920 (its width and height swap). The picture isn't cropped or stretched; it's simply reoriented.
Why the file is re-encoded
Unlike trimming or muting, which copy the video untouched, rotating has to redraw every frame at the new orientation, so the clip is re-encoded. That's why there's a quality setting: High keeps the result as close to the source as possible and is the right default for a simple fix, while Balanced or Small trade a little sharpness for a smaller file. Re-encoding means a longer clip takes longer to process, but the picture won't be cropped and no watermark is added.
Fixing the sideways-phone problem for good
Sideways playback often happens because a phone records landscape footage while storing a rotation flag that some players honor and others ignore, so the same file looks fine in your gallery but sideways on a website, in an editor, or on someone else's device. Rotating here bakes the correct orientation into the video itself, so it displays the right way up everywhere, not just where the flag is read. That makes it the reliable fix before uploading a clip to a platform or dropping it into an edit.
Tips
- Not sure which 90° is right? Pick one; if it faces the wrong way, redo it with the opposite direction.
