Set the range two ways
There are two ways to mark your cut: drag the two handles along the timeline for a quick visual selection, or type exact From and To times when you already know them to the second. Typing is the reliable route for matching a script cue or a beat you spotted while scrubbing; the handles are better for eyeballing where a clip starts breathing or where dead air begins. Switch between them freely, rough in the selection with a handle, then fine-tune the numbers.
Why the start can shift a little
Because the kept range is copied rather than rebuilt, the cut has to begin on a keyframe, a self-contained reference frame the video stores every few seconds. Your chosen start snaps back to the nearest one, so playback can begin a fraction of a second before the exact time you typed. The upside is that the picture is clean from the first frame and the trim finishes almost instantly. If a precise opening matters, set your start slightly ahead of the moment you actually want.
Trimming to fit an upload limit
A shorter clip is a smaller file, so trimming is the quickest way to slip under an upload cap without degrading anything. Real limits worth knowing: Gmail attaches up to 25 MB, a free Discord account allows 10 MB per file, and WhatsApp caps shared video at 16 MB. Cutting to just the essential seconds often gets you under these. A standard X (Twitter) post takes video up to 2 minutes 20 seconds. Trimming changes duration and file size only; it won't change the shape, so a 9:16 vertical clip stays 9:16.
Tips
- Type times into the From/To fields when matching a transcript or a musical beat, it's faster and steadier than nudging handles pixel by pixel.
- Leave about half a second of padding before your intended start, since the cut snaps to the nearest keyframe and can land just before it.
- Check the frame sitting under your From handle before saving, that exact frame is what viewers see first.
- To pull several clips from one recording, trim and save, then reopen the original and set a new range.
