MP4 or WebM: which to pick
Choose MP4 (H.264) when the file has to play anywhere with no surprises: Windows, macOS, iPhone, Android, PowerPoint, editing timelines, and every social platform accept it. Choose WebM (VP9) when you want a smaller file at the same visual quality and don't need broad device support, for example a background clip on your own website. As a rough guide, VP9 often lands 20 to 40 percent smaller than H.264 at matched quality, so WebM is the space-saver and MP4 is the safe default.
Capping resolution and quality to hit a size target
File size is driven mostly by resolution and quality, not the format label. If a clip is 4K but its destination only shows it small, cap the resolution at 1080p or 720p first: dropping from 2160p to 1080p removes three quarters of the pixels and shrinks the file dramatically. Then adjust the quality level, keeping in mind that lowering it hits detailed footage (grass, water, gradients) hardest. Set the resolution the destination actually needs, export once, and only lower quality further if you still need to fit under a specific limit.
Matching common upload and platform limits
Convert with the target in mind. Discord's free tier caps uploads at 10 MB, so a phone-shot clip usually needs 720p and a lower quality setting to fit. Gmail attachments must stay under 25 MB. For social, aspect ratio matters more than format: TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts are built for 9:16 vertical, standard YouTube for 16:9. This tool changes format, resolution, and quality but not the frame shape, so crop or record in the right aspect ratio before converting if a platform expects vertical or square.

- Need it to play on an old phone, a TV, or in PowerPoint? Pick MP4 (H.264); it has the widest hardware support.
- Trying to fit an email or chat cap? Lower the resolution first (1080p to 720p), then reduce quality only if needed.
- Converting a screen recording or animation with flat colors? WebM (VP9) keeps text and edges sharp at a smaller size.
