Pick the right dimensions for where it's going
Match the target before you export. YouTube and most landscape players want 16:9 at 1920×1080. TikTok, Reels, and Shorts are 9:16 vertical at 1080×1920. Instagram's feed accepts square 1:1 (1080×1080) and portrait 4:5 (1080×1350), and 4:5 claims the most screen height in-feed, so it's the stronger choice for reach. If your destination isn't listed, enter a custom width and height. Keep both numbers even, since odd dimensions can be rejected by some players and encoders.
Choose a fit mode that protects your subject
The fit mode decides what happens when the source shape doesn't match the target. Contain keeps the whole frame visible and adds letterbox or pillarbox bars, so nothing is cut but you get borders. Cover fills the frame edge to edge and crops whatever falls outside, which is ideal for turning 16:9 into 9:16 as long as your subject sits near center. Fill stretches the image to the exact box and distorts the picture, so reserve it for cases where a small amount of squash is acceptable.
Going from landscape to vertical without losing the shot
Reframing a 16:9 clip into 9:16 or 4:5 is the trickiest move because you're throwing away a lot of horizontal width. Cover crops from the center, so faces, text, and action parked on the left or right edge will disappear. Before you commit, check where your key elements sit. If the subject drifts off-center, contain keeps everything on screen with bars, which reads fine on feeds where a full-bleed look isn't required.

- For center-framed talking-head footage, cover into 9:16 looks native with no bars.
- Use 4:5 (1080×1350) over 1:1 for Instagram feed posts to take up more vertical space.
