How audio compression shrinks the file

An audio file's size is driven mostly by its bitrate, the amount of data used per second of sound. Lowering the bitrate is what makes the file smaller. This tool re-encodes your audio to an MP3 at the bitrate you choose, so a heavy file becomes something you can actually attach or upload. The bigger the gap between the source bitrate and the level you pick, the more you save; a 320 kbps track dropped to 128 kbps is roughly 2.5× smaller.

Which level to choose

The one control is the compression level, a trade-off between size and fidelity. 192 kbps is light compression that keeps music sounding close to the source. 128 kbps is the everyday sweet spot most listeners can't fault. 96 kbps starts to trade audible detail for a noticeably smaller file. 64 kbps is best kept for spoken-word content, podcasts, voice memos, lectures, where there's no rich instrumentation to preserve and the tiny file is pure upside. Pick the lowest level that still sounds acceptable for how the audio will be used.

Compression is one-way, so keep the original

MP3 is lossy: shrinking the file permanently discards audio data, and re-compressing an already-compressed file stacks loss on loss. That's fine for a finished piece you're sharing, but if you might still edit or remaster, hold onto the original and treat the compressed MP3 as an export copy. Also note this compresses the whole file at its current volume, it won't trim silence, fade, or normalize levels, so do that in an editor first if you need it.

Tips

  • 128 kbps is the safe default for music; most people can't tell it from the original in casual listening.
  • For voice, podcasts, interviews, memos, 64 or 96 kbps sounds fine and makes the file tiny.
  • The savings depend on the source: a file already at a low bitrate won't shrink much further.
  • Keep your original file if you might edit again, since MP3 compression can't be reversed.

It depends on the source bitrate. Dropping 320 kbps music to 128 kbps is about 2.5× smaller; a high-bitrate file taken to 64 kbps for voice can shrink far more. A file already at a low bitrate won't change much.
