Which Instagram format to use
Reels and Stories are full-screen 9:16 (1080×1920), the most screen space and the widest reach. Feed posts look best as 4:5 portrait (1080×1350), which takes more vertical room than a square as people scroll. Square 1:1 (1080×1080) is the classic feed look and still works well for grid consistency. If you're posting a Reel, use 9:16; if it's a feed post you want to stop the scroll, 4:5 is the strongest.
Cover vs contain for reframing
Cover fills the whole Instagram frame and crops the edges, best when your subject is near the center, since a horizontal clip becomes vertical without bars. Contain keeps the entire frame and adds bars, which avoids cutting anything but leaves empty space you may want to fill with a caption or color. For most talking-head or centered footage, cover looks native; for wide shots where the edges matter, contain is safer.
Keep faces and action in frame
Going from a wide 16:9 clip to 9:16 throws away a lot of width, so anything parked on the far left or right gets cropped by cover mode. Before posting, make sure your subject sits near the center of the original. If it doesn't, contain keeps everything visible with bars, an acceptable trade for not losing the shot.
